SweetWorks facts for kids
SweetWorks Confections is a company that makes lots of different candies and chocolates! They own several brands, each with its own special kind of sweet treat. Their main office is in Buffalo, New York, in the United States. SweetWorks is part of a bigger company called Chocolat Frey. They have factories where they make all their yummy products in Buffalo and also in Toronto, Canada.
How SweetWorks Began
SweetWorks Confections started a long time ago in 1956. It was first called Niagara Chocolates. John and Angela Terranova opened this company in Buffalo, New York. They loved making chocolates!
Growing Bigger
In 1992, John and Angela's son, Philip Terranova, took over the company. He helped it grow even more.
A few years later, in 1998, Niagara Chocolates bought another company called Oak Leaf Confections. This purchase also included a brand called Whetstone Chocolates. This meant SweetWorks got a new factory in Toronto, Canada. They also had a factory in St. Augustine, Florida, for a short time. But the Florida factory closed soon after, and all its candy making moved to Buffalo. This allowed them to make even more products, like Sixlets, gumballs, and dextrose candies.
In 2002, the two companies, Niagara Chocolates and Oak Leaf Confections, joined together. They were then renamed SweetWorks Confections.
Joining Chocolat Frey
In 2014, Chocolat Frey, a famous Swiss chocolate maker, bought SweetWorks Confections. This included all of SweetWorks' factories in Buffalo and Toronto. This made SweetWorks part of an even bigger family of sweet treat companies!
SweetWorks' Yummy Brands
SweetWorks Confections owns and operates several different brands. Each brand makes its own special type of sweet.
- Color it Candy: This service lets customers choose the exact color for their favorite SweetWorks candies. It's great for parties or special events!
- Sixlets: These are small, round chocolate candies with a colorful candy coating. They were first introduced in the 1960s and are still very popular.
- Niagara Chocolates: This is the original brand from 1956. They specialize in making delicious chocolates.
- Ovation by Frey: SweetWorks got this chocolate brand from Hershey in 2003. These chocolates are made to be shared and enjoyed with others.
- Bubble King: This is SweetWorks' own brand of fun gumballs.
