Sweetwater's Past

Sweetwater has an interesting history. In 1879, it was an important stop for travelers.

What was a Stage Station?

Back in the old days, before cars and trains, people traveled by horse-drawn coaches called stages. A stage station was a place where these coaches would stop. Travelers could rest there, and the horses could be changed for fresh ones. It was like a gas station and rest stop all in one for horse-drawn travel!

The Pima Agency

Sweetwater was also home to the Pima Agency in 1879. An "agency" was a government office that worked with Native American tribes. The Pima Agency helped manage relations and resources for the Pima people, who are a Native American tribe in the area.
