Swiftwater is a small place in Washington County, Mississippi, United States. It is an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's governed by the county.
History of Swiftwater
Swiftwater started out as a very large farm called Swiftwater Cotton Plantation. It was founded by Alexander Barckly Montgomery, who built a big house there around 1845 or 1850.
Later, Mr. Montgomery sold the plantation to Colonel Ed Richardson. Colonel Richardson was known as the world's biggest owner of cotton farms in the 1870s and 1880s. He owned many plantations across the southern part of the United States.
Swiftwater as a Railroad Stop
Swiftwater became an important stop on the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad. This train line was finished in the 1880s, helping people and goods travel.
Right next to the train tracks, there was a place called the Swiftwater Store. This store was owned by the E.E. Richardson Company and was still open for business in 1910.
Even though Swiftwater was never officially made into a town, it had its own post office for many years. The post office operated from 1886 until 1932.

- Pete Shields, a professional baseball player, was born in Swiftwater. He played for the Cleveland Indians team.
