Swizzels Matlow Limited, often called Swizzels, is a company that makes sweets. Their main factory is in New Mills, Derbyshire, England.

Some of their most famous sweets are Love Hearts, Parma Violets, and Drumstick lollies.

History of Swizzels

How Swizzels Started

The story of Swizzels began in the early 1920s. Two brothers, Maurice and Alfred Matlow, started selling jelly sweets from a market stall in Hackney, London.

In 1928, they built a small factory in east London. They called their business Matlow Brothers. They made jellies and chewy sweets.

In 1933, the Matlow brothers joined with another factory owner, David Dee. He was good at making fizzy tablet sweets. The company officially became Swizzels Matlow Ltd in 1975.

Moving to New Mills

In 1940, during the Blitz (a time when London was bombed during World War II), the company had to move. They moved their business north to a factory in New Mills, Derbyshire. This is where the factory is still located today.

After the move, they created some of their most popular sweets:

Swizzels Today

Swizzels Matlow is a big company. In 2010-2011, they made about £47 million. They employ around 600 people.

Swizzels sends about 20% of its sweets to over 20 countries, mostly in Europe. Their busiest time for selling sweets is around Halloween.

Refreshers

Refreshers are very popular Swizzels sweets. They are flat, chewy sweets with a fizzy sherbet center. You can find them in lemon and strawberry flavors. They are officially called New Refreshers. This helps avoid confusion with another company's Refreshers sweets.

Fizzers Sweets

Fizzers are small, round tablet candies. They fizz and dissolve when you put them in your mouth or in a drink. They are similar to a candy called Smarties in America. Swizzels Matlow also makes bigger versions called Giant Fizzers.

Parma Violets Sweets

Parma Violets are disc-shaped sweets. They are like Fizzers but are all lilac in color. They have a unique, flowery taste and do not fizz. Swizzels Matlow also makes Giant Parma Violets.

Drumstick Sweets

The Drumstick sweet is a chewy lolly. It is about 5 cm long and has two flavors: milk and raspberry. Over the years, many special flavors have been made, like lime and orange. Drumsticks are now suitable for vegans.

In 2012, Swizzels Matlow launched "Drumstick Squashies." These are soft, foam-like chewy sweets that taste just like the original Drumstick lolly. Other flavors, like bubblegum, have also been released.

In 2020, Swizzels made a Drumstick Chocolate Bar. It has milk chocolate with a raspberry and milk flavored filling. It also has small pieces of freeze-dried raspberry. This chocolate bar is suitable for vegetarians.
