The Swoboda Bakery is a historic building in Omaha, Nebraska. It was built in 1888 in the Little Bohemia neighborhood. This area was once home to many Czech immigrants. The bakery was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 19, 1996. This means it is an important place in American history.
The Historic Swoboda Bakery
The Swoboda Bakery was built in 1888 by a company called Joseph Dworak & Company. It quickly became a very important spot for the Czech community in Omaha. The building had two floors. It was first used for both businesses and homes. People could buy fresh baked goods on the first floor. Families lived in apartments on the second floor.
A Special Place in Little Bohemia
The Little Bohemia neighborhood was a vibrant area. Many Czech families settled there when they came to America. The Swoboda Bakery was more than just a place to buy bread. It was a gathering spot for the community. It helped keep Czech traditions alive in Omaha.
From Bakery to Homes
Over time, the building's use changed. In 1996, the City of Omaha helped to fix up the old bakery. After this work was done, the building became only residential. It now provides rental homes for people. Even though it's no longer a bakery, it still stands as a reminder of Omaha's rich immigrant history.
