The Swoboda Bakery is a historic building located in Omaha, Nebraska. It was built in 1888 in a special area called Little Bohemia. This building is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 19, 1996. This list helps protect important places across the United States.
The Story of Swoboda Bakery
The Swoboda Bakery was built in 1888 by a company named Joseph Dworak & Company. It quickly became a very important place for the Czech immigrant community in Omaha. Many people from the Czech Republic came to live in this area.
What Was the Building Used For?
When it was first built, the Swoboda Bakery was a two-story building. It was designed to be used for two different things at once. The ground floor was a business, like a bakery or shop. The upper floor was a place where people lived. This is called a "mixed-use" building.
A New Purpose for the Bakery
In 1996, the building got a special makeover. The city helped pay for this project, which is called a "rehabilitation." After this work was finished, the Swoboda Bakery building changed its purpose. It was no longer a mix of shops and homes. Instead, it became a building with only apartments for rent.
