Charles Hayman (born February 4, 1885 – died July 4, 1910) was a talented baseball player. People knew him by his nicknames, "Sy" and "Bugs". He was a pitcher in the Negro leagues from 1908 to 1910.
During his time, many African American players could not play in the major baseball leagues. So, they formed their own professional teams and leagues. These were known as the Negro leagues. Sy Hayman was one of the stars in these leagues.
Meet Sy Hayman: A Baseball Star
Sy Hayman was born in Salisbury, Maryland. He became a pitcher, which is the player who throws the baseball to the batter. He played for the Philadelphia Giants, a well-known team in the Negro leagues. Sy played with them for three seasons, from 1908 to 1910.
His Amazing No-Hitter Game
One of Sy Hayman's most famous games happened in 1909. He pitched a special game called a no-hitter. This means that for the entire game, no player on the other team got a hit off his pitches. It's a very rare and exciting achievement in baseball! Sy's no-hitter lasted for 12 innings, which is longer than a regular game. This showed how skilled he was as a pitcher.
A Sad Farewell
Sadly, Sy Hayman's life ended too soon. He died in Chester, Pennsylvania in 1910 when he was only 25 years old. He passed away in an accident while he was on his way to a baseball game. His death was a big loss for the Philadelphia Giants and for baseball fans. Even though his career was short, Sy Hayman is remembered for his talent and his amazing no-hitter.
