Sybil Lenora Collins Mobley (October 14, 1925 – September 29, 2015) was a very important leader in business education. She was known for being the first Dean of the School of Business and Industry (SBI) at Florida A&M University (FAMU). She helped many students succeed in the world of business.

Early Life and Education

Sybil Collins grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana. Her father, Melvin Collins, was a teacher and started a newspaper. Her mother was also a teacher. Sybil was a brilliant student and graduated from high school.

She then went to Bishop College in Texas. After college, she became a secretary at FAMU in 1945. People noticed her excellent business skills. They encouraged her to go to graduate school.

Sybil did very well on her graduate school exams. She was accepted into the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania. She even made the Dean's List there. Later, she studied at the University of Illinois. She finished her doctorate classwork in a very short time.

Building a Business School

Dr. Mobley started as a professor at FAMU. She became a department chair from 1971 to 1974. Then, in 1974, she became the founding Dean of the School of Business and Industry (SBI). She led SBI until 2003.

During her time as Dean, Dr. Mobley created a special program. It was called the Professional Leadership Development (PLD) Program. This program taught students important skills for leadership. It helped them develop strong behaviors to go along with their academic studies.

To support her new programs, Dean Mobley started the SBI Big Board. This board has over 100 plaques. Each plaque means someone donated at least $100,000 for student scholarships. The money from the SBI Big Board still helps students today. Because of her huge impact, she was named Dean Emerita when she retired.

Amazing Achievements and Honors

Dean Mobley was a great leader in higher education. She was also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in Florida. This means she was an expert in managing money for businesses.

She served on the boards of many big companies. These included Anheuser-Busch, Hershey Foods, and Sears Roebuck. Dr. Mobley and her husband, James Mobley, were also important in the Civil Rights Movement in Tallahassee.

Dr. Mobley was part of many groups. These included Alpha Kappa Alpha and the Florida Women's Hall of Fame. She also advised the United States government on business in African countries. She received many awards, including the FAMU Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1982, she received a Candace Award for her achievements.

Through her hard work, Dean Mobley changed many lives. She helped thousands of students, teachers, and staff. Her students, known as the "SBI Force," are now successful all over the world. They work in many different fields, from education to big companies. Dean Mobley's dedication to excellent business education will be remembered for many years.

Later Life

Dr. Mobley passed away on September 29, 2015. She was 89 years old. She died in Tallahassee after a short illness.
