Sydney George Hulme Beaman (born 1887 – died 1932) was a talented British author, actor, and illustrator. He is most famous for creating the wonderful Toytown stories. These stories featured beloved characters like Larry the Lamb. Beaman also drew pictures for books, including a 1930s edition of Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Early Life of Sydney Beaman

Sydney Beaman was born in Tottenham, which is in Middlesex, England. He was the oldest of three children. His father, George Hulme Robert Beaman, worked as a surveyor. Before he became famous for his radio work, Sydney worked as an insurance clerk.

Creating Toytown

Sydney Beaman's Toytown stories first aired on the BBC on July 19, 1929. They were part of the popular Children's Hour programme on BBC Radio.

Beaman was very creative. He would develop his ideas for the show in a special miniature theatre at his home. He made the characters himself by cutting them out of wood and painting them. Then, he would make them move like puppets on the stage. He even played the music for the shows himself!

Sydney Beaman often visited the studio when his stories were being broadcast. Sometimes, he would even take part in the programme. He continued to be involved with the show right up until shortly before he passed away.

Sydney Beaman's Family and Passing

Sydney Beaman married Maud Mary Poltock on April 19, 1913. Their wedding took place at All Saints Church in Fulham, west London. The next year, they had a son named Geoffrey.

Sydney Beaman died at his home in Golders Green, Middlesex, when he was 44 years old. He passed away from pneumonia. His wife, Maud, survived him.
