Sydney Hall went to Northwest Catholic High School in West Hartford, Connecticut, and finished in 1991. After high school, he attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He also became a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

Time in South Africa

In 1994, Sydney Hall traveled to Soweto in Johannesburg, South Africa. He went with the Step Afrika! stepping dance group, which was made up of his fraternity brothers. He lived in South Africa for several years. During this time, he worked as a model and an actor. He also owned a nightclub there. Starting in 2002, he played a character named Dr CL Phunk in a series of retro-style TV commercials. These commercials were for the Chicken Licken fast-food restaurant chain.
