A Time of Change
In the 1500s, England was going through big changes in religion. The country's official church was the Church of England. However, many people, like Sydney Hodgson, remained Catholic or chose to become Catholic. Because of this, Catholics sometimes faced difficulties and were not allowed to practice their faith openly.
Standing Up for Beliefs
In 1591, a Catholic priest named Father Edmund Gennings was holding a secret Mass (a Catholic church service) at the home of Swithin Wells in London. During the service, an official named Richard Topcliffe, who was known for finding Catholics, and his helpers broke into the house.
Sydney Hodgson and some other men bravely stood in the way. They wanted to give Father Gennings enough time to finish the important part of the Mass. After the service was complete, they peacefully gave themselves up.
Hodgson and the others were put on trial on December 4, 1591. Sydney Hodgson was accused of helping Catholic priests and of being a Catholic himself. He was offered a chance to be set free if he would promise to attend the Church of England services sometimes. However, he refused to give up his Catholic faith.
Because he would not change his beliefs, he was found guilty. Sydney Hodgson was executed in a place called Tyburn on December 10, 1591. He died because he chose to stay true to his faith.
His Legacy
Sydney Hodgson is remembered as one of the many people who died for their Catholic faith in England during that time. In 1929, the Catholic Church officially recognized him as "beatified." This means he is considered a blessed person who lived a holy life and died for his beliefs.
