Sylvan Beach, Washington facts for kids
Sylvan Beach is a small community located on the west side of Vashon Island in King County, Washington. It sits along the Colvos Passage. This special place is known as a "walk-in" community because most of the homes here can only be reached by walking along a boardwalk from the main road. People often use wheelbarrows to carry their groceries and other supplies to their houses!
What Makes Sylvan Beach Special?
Sylvan Beach is marked on maps used by boats because of some old wooden poles, called pilings, that stick out about 100 yards into the Colvos Passage. These pilings are all that is left of an old dock.
The Historic Ferry Connection
This dock was once used by a famous steamship ferry called the Virginia V. This ferry was part of the "mosquito fleet," which was a group of small boats that carried passengers and goods around the Puget Sound area. The Virginia V used to travel daily from Tacoma to Seattle, making stops at places like Sylvan Beach.
