Sylvanie Burton is an important leader in Dominica. She became the president of Dominica in 2023. This was a big moment for the country. She is the first woman to hold this high office. She is also the first person from the Kalinago Indigenous group to become president.
Becoming President
Sylvanie Burton was chosen by the government of Dominica. The government is led by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit. They wanted her to become the next president. The previous president was Charles Savarin.
However, the leader of the opposition party did not agree with her nomination. Because of this, the members of parliament had to vote. They voted between Sylvanie Burton and another person chosen by the opposition. Sylvanie Burton won the vote and became president.
Her Work Before Presidency
Before becoming president, Sylvanie Burton worked in many important roles. Since 2014, she served as a permanent secretary in different government departments. A permanent secretary helps manage the daily work of a ministry.
She worked in ministries that focused on:

- Improving life in rural areas
- Supporting the Kalinago people
- Helping different parts of the country
- Foreign affairs and trade
- Youth and social services

Sylvanie Burton is married and has two children. She was born in 1956. She has studied a lot to prepare for her important roles.
She earned a master's degree in project management. She got this degree from the University of Manchester in England. She also has a bachelor's degree in rural development. She earned this from St. Francis Xavier University in Canada. Her education helped her gain skills to lead and manage projects for her country.
