Sylvia Wishart (born February 11, 1936 – died December 4, 2008) was a talented Scottish artist. She was famous for her landscape paintings. Sylvia often painted the beautiful scenery of Scotland.

Early Life in Orkney
Sylvia Wishart was born in 1936. She grew up in a town called Stromness in Orkney, Scotland. Her neighbor was a famous Scottish poet named George Mackay Brown. They became good friends.
Sylvia's Art Career
Sylvia first worked at a post office. But she loved to paint in her free time. People saw how good she was and encouraged her. She decided to study art at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen.
From 1969 to 1987, Sylvia taught art at Gray's School. She taught students how to paint and draw. Her drawings were even used in a book. This book was called An Orkney Tapestry. It was written by her friend, George Mackay Brown, in 1969.
Exhibitions and Recognition
Sylvia Wishart's art became very well known. In 2005, she became a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy. This is a special group for artists in Scotland.
Her paintings were shown in many art exhibitions. The Pier Arts Centre in Orkney held shows of her work. These shows happened in 1992, 2007, and 2011.
What Sylvia Painted
Most of Sylvia's paintings showed the landscapes and seascapes of Orkney. She loved to paint the views from her cottage window. Especially the beautiful Hoy Sound.
Later in her career, she started using different art methods. She mixed various materials in her paintings. A friend of Sylvia's was Margaret Gardiner. Margaret was a person who supported many artists.
Sylvia's Legacy
Sylvia Wishart and George Mackay Brown had a long friendship. They shared an interest in the Roman Catholic faith. Sylvia passed away in 2008 when she was 72 years old.
Her artwork is kept in many important places. You can find her paintings at Robert Gordon University. They are also at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Pier Art Centre. Other places include the University of Leeds and the Scottish Maritime Museum.
After she died, a book was written about her. It was called Sylvia Wishart: A Study and came out in 2012. Also in 2012, the Royal Scottish Academy held a special show of her art. A film called Reflections – The Life and Art of Sylvia Wishart was made in 2011. It included interviews with her friends and people she worked with.
