Sylvie Bélanger (born May 8, 1951 – died October 8, 2020) was a Canadian artist. She created art using many different things like sound, video, photos, and special art setups called installations. She lived and worked in Toronto for many years. She was a professor at SUNY Buffalo until she retired in 2017. After that, she moved to Montréal.

Early Life and Education
Sylvie Bélanger studied at several universities. She earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree from York University. She also received a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Concordia University. Before that, she studied Philosophy of Religion at Université de Montréal.
Her Art and Exhibitions
Bélanger's art often combined different types of media. Her multimedia installations were shown in many countries. She exhibited her work across Canada, the USA, and in places like France, Germany, Spain, England, the Netherlands, Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, and China.
In 1999, art historian Joan Murray wrote about Bélanger's works. She mentioned pieces like He and She (1992) in her book "Canadian Art in the Twentieth Century." Murray described these works as clever and mysterious.
Public Art at Bessarion Station
In 2002, Sylvie Bélanger was asked to create public art for the Bessarion subway station in Toronto. Her artwork there is a series of friezes. These are long strips of art that show images of hands, feet, and the backs of heads. They represent the people who use the subway station every day.
- Images of feet can be seen on the station's concourse level.
- The heads appear on the platform level, where people wait for trains.
- Pictures of hands are placed along the stairs. These stairs connect the Sheppard Avenue entrance to the concourse.
Later Life and Passing
Sylvie Bélanger passed away on October 8, 2020. She was 69 years old and died from cancer.
