Sylvie Paycha was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, on March 27, 1960. She is a French mathematician and a mathematical physicist. This means she studies math and how it applies to physics. She works as a professor at the University of Potsdam in Germany.

Sylvie Paycha has also been a leader for two important groups. She chaired European Women in Mathematics and L'association femmes et mathématiques. These groups work to support and encourage women who study and work in mathematics.

Sylvie Paycha studied hard to become a mathematician. She earned her PhD degree in 1988. She completed her studies at the University of Bochum in Germany. Her main teacher and guide for her PhD was Sergio Albeverio.
