The Ruhr University Bochum (called Ruhr-Universität Bochum in German, or RUB for short) is a large public research university in the city of Bochum, Germany. A public university means it is funded by the government, so it's open to everyone. It's also a research university, where professors and students work on discovering new things.

RUB was founded in 1962. It was the first new public university built in Germany after World War II. Students started taking classes there in 1965. Today, it's one of Germany's biggest universities. It is part of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, which is Germany's most important group for funding new research projects.

The university is known for being one of the first in Germany to offer bachelor's and master's degrees. These are common degrees around the world. The university offers 184 different subjects to study, covering almost every topic you can think of.

Campus and Buildings

Unlike many old universities in Europe where buildings are spread across a city, RUB has all its main buildings on one big campus. The campus is located on the southern hills of Bochum, near the Ruhr river valley.

A "Harbor of Knowledge"

The campus was designed in the 1960s with a special idea. The architect, Helmut Hentrich, wanted it to look like a "harbor of knowledge." The 14 main buildings were designed to look like ships, and the paths and bridges between them were like a port.

The buildings are a famous example of an architectural style called Brutalism. This style often uses large, blocky shapes made of concrete. While some people find the buildings unusual, they are a well-known feature of the university.

Because the campus is built on a hill, the buildings have a cool trick. Even though their roofs are all at the same height against the sky, the buildings themselves are different heights to match the shape of the land.

Modernizing the Campus

The university is currently updating its campus. Some of the original 1960s buildings are being rebuilt to make them more modern and safe. The goal is to turn the campus into a top-notch facility and help Bochum be known as a "city of knowledge."

How the University is Organized

The Ruhr University is run by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It's one of the ten largest universities in Germany. As of 2014, it had over 42,000 students and about 5,600 staff members, including 411 professors.

Students at RUB can study a wide variety of subjects. The university is divided into 21 different departments, which are called faculties.
