The Ruhr University Bochum (also called RUB) is a big public university in Bochum, Germany. It's located in the southern part of the central Ruhr area.

This university was started in 1962. It was the first new public university built in Germany after World War II. Classes officially began in 1965.

The Ruhr University Bochum is one of the biggest universities in Germany. It's also part of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. This is a very important group that helps fund research in Germany.

The RUB did very well in a special competition called the German Universities Excellence Initiative in 2007. This competition was for Germany's best universities. The RUB was close to being named an "elite university," but didn't quite make it in the final round. Only nine universities in Germany have this special title.

The University of Bochum was one of the first in Germany to offer international bachelor's and master's degrees. These new degrees replaced the older German ones. Most of the university's departments now offer these degrees. Right now, the university has 184 different study programs. These programs cover many different subjects.

University Campus and Buildings

Unlike many older German universities, all the buildings at Ruhr University are in one place. The campus is located south of the city of Bochum. The medical school also has some clinics in different parts of Bochum and the Ruhr area. One important hospital is the University Hospital/Knappschaftskrankenhaus.

The main university campus has a special building style from the 1960s called Brutalism. This style uses a lot of concrete. There are 14 tall buildings that look very similar. Even though their roofs all look like they are at the same height, the buildings are actually different heights. This is because the campus is built on hilly land. The university is on high ground next to the Ruhr river valley.

The architect, Helmut Hentrich, designed the buildings and paths to look like a "harbor of knowledge." The buildings were meant to look like ships in a harbor.

The campus has been updated and expanded a lot. Many new buildings have been built, and old ones have been fixed up. Some of the original 1960s buildings are even being rebuilt completely. This is because of a type of pollution called PCB. The goal for the campus is to be a modern place. It also helps Bochum be known as a "knowledge city."
