Maximilian Reinelt (born August 24, 1988 – died February 9, 2019) was a German rower. He was also a doctor. Maximilian was famous for winning many medals in rowing. He earned a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics and a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He also won two World Rowing Championships and four European Rowing Championships. In 2016, he received Germany's highest sports award, the Silbernes Lorbeerblatt.

Maximilian's Rowing Journey
Maximilian Reinelt began his rowing career in 2006. He started as a junior rower for Germany. He quickly showed his talent. He finished second in three U23 World Championship events. In 2010, his coach, Ralf Holtmeyer, moved him to the senior team.
Olympic and World Success
Maximilian was part of the German men's eight rowing team. This team won a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. This was a very special win. It was Germany's first gold medal in this event since 1988.
He also won gold medals at the World Rowing Championships. These wins were in 2010 and 2011. He also earned silver medals at the World Championships in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
European Championship Wins
Maximilian's team also dominated the European Rowing Championships. They won gold medals four times in a row. These wins happened in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016. His German team set an amazing record. They won 36 races in a row!
At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Maximilian's team won a silver medal. For their great achievements, the eight rowers received the Silbernes Lorbeerblatt. This is Germany's top sports award. Maximilian had already received this award in 2012 for his Olympic gold.
Life After Rowing
After the 2016 Olympics, Maximilian decided to stop competitive rowing. He wanted to focus on his studies. He was studying medicine in Bochum. Two other rowers from his 2016 Olympic team also retired. They were Andreas Kuffner and Maximilian Munski.
In early 2019, Maximilian became a doctor for Germany's U23 rowing team. He was planning to attend their training camp in Spain.
Maximilian's Passing
On February 9, 2019, Maximilian Reinelt passed away. He was skiing in St. Moritz, Switzerland, with his fiancée. Efforts to help him were unsuccessful. The police in Graubünden announced his death.
IOC president Thomas Bach spoke about Maximilian. He said Maximilian was a great German rower. He was also a very kind person. He managed to be a top athlete and study to become a doctor at the same time.
An examination after his passing showed that Maximilian had an unknown health condition. This condition caused a sudden heart issue. This led to his passing.
