Synlestes is a special group, or genus, of large damselflies. These amazing insects belong to the family Synlestidae. You can find them in eastern Australia, where they love to live near streams.
These damselflies are quite big and have cool colors. They can be shiny metallic green, dark bronze, or even black. They often have bright white, yellow, or orange marks on their bodies. One interesting thing about Synlestes damselflies is how they rest. Unlike many other damselflies, they spread their wings out flat when they are not flying.
What Kinds of Synlestes Are There?
The Synlestes group includes a few different types of damselflies. Each one has its own common name, which often describes something about it.
- Synlestes selysi Tillyard, 1917 - This one is called the forest needle.
- Synlestes tropicus Tillyard, 1917 - This is known as the tropical needle.
- Synlestes weyersii Selys, 1868 - This type is called the bronze needle.
