The Story of Synnøve Finden
Synnøve Finden (1882-1957) was a very important person in Norway. She is known as Norway's first female cheese maker and factory owner.
How It All Began
In 1928, Synnøve Finden opened her first cheese factory. She started it with Pernille Holmen and Pernille's 13-year-old daughter, Evy. Their factory was located in Oslo, on a place called the Grefsen Plateau.
Their cheese became very popular after it was shown to groups of housewives called Hjemmenes Vel. This helped their business grow a lot.
New Owners and Growth
Many years later, in 1987, the company Synnøve Finden A/S was sold to a person named Dag Swanstrøm. The production of cheese then moved to Enebakk Municipality.
Under Dag Swanstrøm's ownership, the company made a big step forward in 1996. They became a strong competitor to the main dairy company in Norway, which was then called Norwegian Dairies (now Tine).
In January 1997, the Minister of Agriculture, Gunhild Øyangen, announced something important. The government and the Norwegian Farmers' Association agreed to allow more competition in the dairy industry. This was good news for companies like Synnøve Finden.
Before this, in 1995, the new owner had bought a closed Tine dairy in Alvdal Municipality. This helped Synnøve Finden expand its production.
Becoming a National Competitor
From 1996 to 2008, Synnøve Finden became the first company to compete with Tine all over Norway. They sold both yellow cheese and brown cheese across the country.
In 2008, the company got new owners: Jan Bodd and Stig Sunde, who are also from Norway. Ten years after they took over, Karl Kristian Sunde joined them as a partner and owner.
Synnøve Goes Global
In 2020, Synnøve Finden started selling its brown cheese in South Korea. This was a big step for the company. By May 2021, they had sold more than 52,000 brown cheeses in South Korea!
