Synnøve Finden is a Norwegian company that makes dairy products. They are known for their cheese, butter, and juice. Their farms are located in Alvdal and Namsos.
The company started selling its yellow cheese on September 21, 1996. They added brown cheese to their products in 1997. Synnøve Finden is now the main Norwegian company that competes with Tine in the cheese market.
How Synnøve Finden Started
Synnøve Finden (1882-1957) was a very important person in Norwegian history. She is seen as Norway's first female cheese maker and factory owner.
In 1928, Synnøve Finden opened her first cheese factory. She started it with Pernille Holmen and Pernille's 13-year-old daughter, Evy. Their factory was located in Oslo, on the Grefsen Plateau. Their cheese became popular when it was first shown to groups called Hjemmenes Vel, which were housewives' associations.
In 1987, the company Synnøve Finden A/S was sold to Dag Swanstrøm. Production then moved to Enebakk. With Swanstrøm as the new owner, the company grew a lot. In 1996, they became a real competitor to the big dairy company, Norwegian Dairies (Tine). Tine used to have almost all the dairy business in Norway, like a "monopoly."
In January 1997, the government decided to allow more competition in the dairy industry. The Minister of Agriculture, Gunhild Øyangen from the Labour Party, announced this change. This meant other companies like Synnøve Finden could sell their products more widely. Before this, in 1995, the new owner had bought a Tine dairy in Alvdal that was no longer in use.
Growing and Competing
From 1996 to 2008, Synnøve Finden became Tine's first competitor across all of Norway. They sold both yellow cheese and brown cheese.
In 2008, the company got new owners, Jan Bodd and Stig Sunde, who are Norwegian. Ten years later, Karl Kristian Sunde also joined as a partner and owner.
Synnøve Goes to Korea
In 2020, Synnøve Finden started selling its brown cheese in South Korea. This was a big step for the company. By May 2021, they had sold over 52,000 brown cheeses there.
