TINE SA is a very large Norwegian company that makes dairy products. It's special because it's a cooperative, which means it's owned by about 15,000 farmers who supply the milk! These farmers work together and share in the company's success.
TINE is Norway's biggest dairy cooperative. They make many different dairy products, and some of their famous ones include Jarlsberg cheese, Snøfrisk goat cheese, and Ski-Queen (a type of brown cheese called brunost). In 2013, the company earned about 20.4 billion Norwegian kroner. Because TINE is so big in Norway, they sometimes face criticism if there aren't enough products available. TINE is the most important of the 13 farmer-owned cooperatives in Norway.
The Story of TINE
Dairy cooperatives, where farmers work together, started in Norway way back in 1856. The first national dairy group was formed in 1881. TINE SA itself began in 1928. It was first called "Norwegian Dairies' Export Company." Over the years, its name changed a few times. In 1992, they started using "Tine" as an easy-to-remember brand name for their products.
In 2008, TINE was recognized as the world's top cooperative by a group called the International Cooperative Alliance. In 2010, the company became a nationwide group under new laws for cooperatives, and its name officially changed to TINE SA. The word "tine" comes from an old Norwegian wooden box used to keep butter and cheese fresh. It's a cool connection to their dairy roots!
