Diplom-Is AS is a famous Norwegian company that makes delicious ice cream! It's owned by a big dairy group called Tine. In 2005, Diplom-Is made over 51 million liters of ice cream. That's a lot of treats! They also sold more than half of all the ice cream in Norway that year.
Diplom-Is makes many popular ice cream brands. Some of their own well-known names include Royal, Dream, Krone-Is, Pin-Up, and Lollipop. They also make ice cream for other famous brands like Mövenpick, Mars, and Nestlé in countries like Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.

A Sweet History of Ice Cream
Ice cream factories first started in Norway in the 1920s. Towards the end of that decade, Norwegian dairy companies created their own special ice cream brand: Diplom-Is. The very first advertisement for Diplom-Is appeared in 1930 in Oslo.
Growing the Ice Cream Business
By 1931, Diplom-Is was making ice cream all year round. Oslo even got its own special ice cream truck to deliver the tasty treats! During World War II, not much ice cream was made. After the war, many smaller companies started making ice cream. Many of these were owned by local dairy farms.
In 1951, all these different ice cream makers decided to use the same name: Diplom-Is. This made Diplom-Is a national brand, meaning it was sold all over Norway!
Becoming One Big Company
Even though they shared a name, it wasn't until 1991 that all the dairy companies making Diplom-Is joined together into one big company. This new company was called Norsk Iskrem BA, which means "Norwegian Ice Cream."
For the next four years, there was a bit of an "ice cream war" in Norway! Diplom-Is was competing with a Swedish ice cream company called GB Is. But by 1995, GB Is left the Norwegian market. Around the same time, Diplom-Is started making the Swiss brand Mövenpick under a special agreement.
Expanding to Other Countries
Diplom-Is started selling its ice cream in Denmark in 1992. Then, in 2004, they expanded into Sweden. In 2002, the company officially changed its name to Diplom-Is AS.
Later, in 2010, another big company called Unilever bought the part of Diplom-Is that operated in Denmark.
