Mövenpick Ice Cream is a popular ice cream brand that started in Switzerland. It was first made by Nestlé. Since 2016, a company called Froneri has been making it. Froneri is a joint company formed by Nestlé and another ice cream company, R&R Ice Cream.

The Story of Mövenpick Ice Cream

How Mövenpick Began

The very first Mövenpick restaurant opened its doors in Zürich, Switzerland, on July 19, 1948. It was started by a person named Ueli Prager. By 1958, there were eight Mövenpick restaurants across Switzerland. Ueli Prager continued to manage the Mövenpick group, which is now known as Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, until 1991.

Making the Ice Cream

In the 1960s, Mövenpick ice cream was made only for its own restaurants. A special factory was built in Bursins in 1972 to make the ice cream. However, the production has since moved to a bigger factory in Rorschach.

Growing Around the World

In 1974, a German ice cream maker named Theo Schöller was given permission to sell Mövenpick ice cream in Germany. Later, in 2002, Nestlé bought the Scholler Holding Group. This deal allowed Nestlé to sell Mövenpick in some European countries.

In April 2003, Nestlé bought the worldwide rights for Mövenpick ice cream from the hotel group. This created a new business unit called "Swiss Premium Ice Cream." By 2014, this business was run by "Nestlé Super Premium," based in Vevey, Switzerland. Then, in 2016, Mövenpick became one of the brands that Nestlé brought into the new company, Froneri.

How Mövenpick Ice Cream Is Made and Shared

Main Production Areas

The main place where Mövenpick ice cream is made is in Switzerland. For countries in the Middle East, the ice cream is made in a Nestlé factory in Egypt, following Halal rules.

Mövenpick also works with other companies to make and sell its ice cream in countries like Germany, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.

Special Ice Cream Making Process

In 2006, Nestlé Schöller announced a new way to make ice cream. This special process helps create tiny ice crystals and bubbles as the ice cream freezes. This means the ice cream can have less fat (30% to 40% less!) but still be super creamy and full of flavor. This process was used for popular flavors like Bourbon Vanilla, Chocolate Chips, Strawberry Cream, and Maple Walnuts.

Making Ice Cream in Different Countries

Mövenpick ice cream is made in various places around the world through special agreements.

Canada

In the 1990s, Mövenpick ice cream was made in Simcoe, Canada. Later, other companies took over the production, but it eventually stopped in Canada in 2010.

However, there were some problems with the contract, and Southern Fresh stopped making Mövenpick ice cream in 2001.

Later, in 2003, another company in New Zealand, Chateau Creme Delight Ice Cream, continued to make Mövenpick ice creams. Today, Emerald Foods makes Mövenpick products in New Zealand.

In September 2010, Mövenpick's slogan, "The art of Swiss ice cream," was mentioned in an article about a proposed "Swissness Bill." This bill aimed to legally define what products could be advertised as "made in Switzerland."

In August 2017, Mövenpick increased the prices of its ice creams in Switzerland by 2.5 percent. This was because the cost of vanilla beans went up after a big storm, Cyclone Enawo, damaged vanilla crops in Madagascar.
