Synod of Hippo facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Synod of Hippo was an important meeting of Christian leaders called a synod. It happened in the year 393 AD in a city called Hippo Regius, which was located in northern Africa. This was during the time of the early Christian Church. Other similar meetings, also called synods, were held in Hippo in the years 394, 397, 401, and 426.

Some of these meetings were attended by a very famous Christian leader named St. Augustine. The Synod of Hippo in 393 is especially well-known for two main reasons.

What Happened at the Synod of Hippo?

The Synod of 393 was a big deal because, for the first time, a group of bishops (important church leaders) officially listed and agreed upon the books that would be part of the Sacred Scripture. This official list of books is called a canon.

The Bible's Official List

The list of Bible books agreed upon at the Synod of Hippo is almost the same as the one used today by the Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches. This decision was very important for the future of Christianity. Later on, this same list of books was also agreed upon at another important meeting called the Council of Carthage.
