Sándor Popovics (born June 22, 1939 – died July 1, 2019) was a talented football player and coach. He was originally from Hungary but later became a citizen of the Netherlands. He played as a forward and coached many teams in both the Netherlands and Belgium.

Playing Football

Sándor Popovics started his football journey in Hungary. He played for a team called Újpest Dózsa from 1958 to 1960.

In 1960, while playing a game in Austria, Sándor made a big decision. He decided to leave Hungary, which was under the control of the Soviet Union at that time. This was a difficult period for many people in Hungary.

After leaving Hungary, he continued his football career in Germany. He played for SpVgg Fürth from 1960 to 1963. Later, he moved to the Netherlands. There, he played for Sparta (1963–1964) and FC Zaanstreek (1964–1966).

Coaching Career

After he stopped playing football, Sándor Popovics became a coach. He first coached several amateur clubs in the Netherlands. These included Quick (1970–1971), MVV '27 (1971–1972), RFC Rotterdam (1972–1974), Overmaas (1974–1976), Unitas (1976–1977), Xerxes (1977–1978), and Barendrecht (1978–1980).

Professional Teams

Sándor's first professional team as a coach was SVV Schiedam (1980–1981). After that, he coached a Belgian team called Waregem (1981–1983).

He then returned to the Netherlands to coach more professional teams. These included De Graafschap (1983–1985), NEC Nijmegen (1985–1987), Cambuur (1988–1990), Excelsior Rotterdam (1990–1992), and FC Eindhoven (1993–1994).

He also coached MTK Budapest in Hungary twice. In Belgium, he coached Verbroedering Geel.

In July 2010, he briefly coached RBC Roosendaal. He left after just six days because of a disagreement. The club wanted his assistant coaches, who didn't have the right licenses, to do most of the main coaching work.

Other Roles

Besides coaching, Sándor Popovics also held other important positions in football. He was a general manager at ADO Den Haag. In February 2002, he became the head scout for NAC. A head scout helps find new talented players for the team.

Personal Life

In 1970, Sándor Popovics became a naturalized Dutch citizen. This means he officially became a citizen of the Netherlands.

He was married to Corrie. Corrie was previously married to another football player, Theo Laseroms. Sándor was also the father-in-law of Gábor Babos, who was a goalkeeper for NEC Nijmegen and Hungary.

Sadly, Sándor Popovics suffered from Alzheimer's disease, a brain disease that affects memory and thinking. He passed away on July 1, 2019.
