Tábara Arriba is a town and a municipality in the Azua area of the Dominican Republic. It is located about 28 kilometers (about 17 miles) from Azua, which is the capital city of the province.

In 2002, the town had a total population of 12,475 people. About 3,709 people lived in the main town area, and 8,766 people lived in the countryside around it.

Daily Life and Economy

The people of Tábara Arriba mostly work in farming. Their main crops are coffee, tobacco, and pigeon peas. Some people also raise cattle, but this is less common.

Many people from Tábara Arriba have moved to Spain to find work. They often send money back home to their families. This money, called remittances, helps the town grow and develop.

Fun Traditions and Culture

In towns like Tábara Arriba, local leaders called mayors help keep things organized and peaceful. The very first mayor of Tábara Arriba was named Leon Brito.

Local Celebrations

One of the most important cultural events is the annual festival for San Miguel Arcangel. This celebration happens every year from September 21st to September 30th. During the festival, a young woman is chosen to be the queen. The first festival was organized in 1958 by Emilio Jose Caminero and Mercedes Ramirez. The first queen was Miss Teresa Carrasco.

It is also common during these holidays for people to play sports games together.

Music and Gatherings

Drums are very popular in clubs or parties. There are also "sailing days and nights." These are special gatherings where people honor saints. During these events, drums are played, and songs called "salves" are sung. These songs are often joined by a guiro and maracas, which are musical instruments.

Tábara Arriba has two main schools:

  • The Liceo Roque Feliz was built between 1994 and 1995. It opened in March 1995 with 68 students, five teachers, and a director. This school has a modern computer center for students to use.
  • The Elementary School Tábara Arriba was built in 1972. It teaches students from first to eighth grade. Classes are held in both the morning and the evening.

The town also has a development council and 37 legal helpers. There are programs to help people learn to read, radio schools, and a faith-based training program called Together we learn more. Tábara Arriba also has two libraries, a park, two churches, a town hall, and a police station.

Getting Around Town

The most common way to get around Tábara Arriba today is by motoconcho. These are motorcycles that carry passengers. There are also small buses that take people between Azua and Tábara. Trucks are used to move farm products to Santo Domingo and other areas.
