About the T.B. Perry House
The T.B. Perry House is a great example of High Victorian eclectic style. This means it mixes different fancy design ideas from the Victorian era. It's one of four big brick houses in Albia, often called the "Four Sisters." These houses all have a special brick pattern on their outside walls. This brick pattern was unusual for the area when they were built. It suggests that the same architect or bricklayer might have worked on all of them. The Elbert-Bates House is another one of these "sister" homes.
Who Was T.B. Perry?
The house is named after Theodore Perry. He was an important person in Albia. Theodore Perry worked as a lawyer and a businessman. He also served as a state lawmaker in the Iowa Senate for two terms. This means he helped make laws for the state of Iowa. He also helped build other important buildings in the Albia Square and Central Commercial Historic District.
Special Design Features
The T.B. Perry House was designed by Charles A. Dunham. He was from a well-known architecture firm called Dunham & Jordan in Burlington, Iowa. The house is known for its amazing roof system. It has many different parts, including five dormer windows that stick out from the roof. It also has two hip-and-deck roofs, three gable roofs, and two hipped roofs.
The roof is very steep and has cool decorations. These include finials (decorative tops), pendants (hanging decorations), and brackets. There's also a modified frieze (a decorative band) under the eaves (the part of the roof that hangs over the walls). Other fancy details on the outside include barge boards on the second story and entry gables. The front porch has special Gothic tracery millwork, which looks like delicate carved patterns.
National Recognition
Because of its unique style and history, the T.B. Perry House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This means it's recognized as an important historical building in the United States.
