TV+ (pronounced Te Ve Más or TV Más) is a Chilean free-to-air television channel. It broadcasts from Santiago. Before, it was known as the Television Corporation of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso or UCV Televisión. It was the oldest TV station in Chile. It was also the only regional network outside Santiago that could be seen all over the country.
TV+ started broadcasting experimentally in 1957. This happened at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso. The channel officially launched in August 1959. In 2017, its offices moved to Viña del Mar. On November 21, 2018, the channel changed its name to "TV+". It also got a new look. Later that month, a digital subchannel called UCV 3 became UCV Televisión. It broadcasts from its original studios in Viña del Mar.
In recent years, the channel's viewership started to drop. In 2016, the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso looked for a business partner. They wanted to improve the TV network. On December 29, the university announced a new deal. They sold most of the channel to a company called «TV+ SpA». The university still owns 10% of the network. A new company, Media 23 SpA, owns the other 90%.
History of TV+
On October 5, 1957, the first TV broadcast in Chile happened. It was done by researchers from the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso. This broadcast showed the opening of a new campus. The President of Chile, Carlos Ibáñez del Campo, was there. Other government leaders also attended the event.
This event is seen as Chile's first real TV broadcast. The TV station even aired a news report after the event. The TV station officially launched on August 22, 1959. It was on VHF channel 8 in Valparaíso. Its first TV show was El hombre ante el universo. This was a cultural program. From 1957 to 1960, UCV TV broadcast from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM. From 1968 to 1970, it broadcast for longer hours. It was on air from 3:00 PM to 12:00 AM. In 1969, the network changed its frequency. It moved to VHF channel 4 in Valparaíso.
In 1971, UCV TV built a relay transmitter in La Serena. This was the first city outside Valparaíso to get UCV TV. Three years later, in 1974, another transmitter was built in Santiago. In 1975, UCV bought portable video cameras. This made it easier to record outside the studio. Most TV stations at that time used older film cameras. UCV TV was ahead of its competitors.
In 1978, UCV TV started broadcasting in color. Santiago's channel 13 also started color broadcasts. UCV TV quickly adapted to these changes. In the same year, it broadcast the first Teletón event. It was known as "Red UCV Televisión". You could find it on channels 4, 5, and 8. These were the frequencies in Valparaíso, Santiago, and La Serena. The channel in La Serena also showed programs from Santiago's channel 13.
An affiliate channel started in Puerto Montt in 1990. It was first on channel 7. In 1998, it moved to channel 8. By then, it became a relay broadcaster. That same year, UCV changed its frequency to Channel 5. This was to make way for another channel called La Red.
High-Definition TV
The channel launched its own HD (High-Definition) broadcast on June 25, 2010. It was still called UCV Televisión then. The HD broadcast was named UCV TV HD. It showed the football match between Chile and Spain. This was during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The broadcast was done with TVN. It launched on digital TV as channel 29.1 in Valparaíso. In Santiago, it was channel 5.1. The picture quality is very clear.
