Marigolds are bright, cheerful flowers. They belong to a group of plants called Tagetes. There are 56 different kinds, or species, of marigolds. These plants are part of the sunflower family, known as Asteraceae. Marigolds originally come from North and South America.
What are Marigolds Like?
Marigold plants come in many sizes. They can be as small as 0.1 meters (about 4 inches) tall. Some can grow much taller, up to 2.2 meters (over 7 feet) high. Most marigold plants have green leaves. These leaves are often pinnate, meaning they look like a feather. They have small leaflets arranged along a central stem.
Marigold flowers naturally bloom in bright colors. You can find them in shades of gold, orange, and yellow. Some types also have white flowers. People often plant marigolds in gardens. They are usually grown as annuals. This means they complete their whole life cycle in one year. They grow, flower, produce seeds, and then die.
