A taipan

A taipan is a type of large, very fast, and highly venomous snake. They belong to a group of snakes called Oxyuranus. Taipans are part of the elapid family, which includes many other venomous snakes.

These snakes are only found in Australasia, meaning Australia and parts of New Guinea. There are three main kinds, or species, of taipans. One of these, the coastal taipan, even has two smaller groups called subspecies. Taipans are known as some of the most dangerous snakes in the world.

What is a Taipan?

Taipans are known for being very quick and having extremely strong venom. They are among the largest venomous snakes in Australia. These snakes are quite shy and prefer to avoid people. However, if they feel threatened, they can strike very quickly.

Different Kinds of Taipans

There are three main types of taipans:

  • The coastal taipan (Oxyuranus scutellatus) is found along the coastlines of northern and eastern Australia. It also lives in New Guinea. This taipan is usually a light olive or reddish-brown color.
  • The inland taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus), also known as the fierce snake, lives in the dry, sandy areas of central Australia. It changes color with the seasons, becoming darker in winter to absorb more heat.
  • The Papuan taipan (Oxyuranus canni) is found in Papua New Guinea. It looks similar to the coastal taipan.

Taipan Venom

Taipans have very powerful venom. Their venom affects the nervous system, causing paralysis. It also affects the blood, making it harder to clot. Because their venom is so strong, it's very important to get medical help right away if someone is bitten by a taipan. Scientists have developed antivenom, which is a medicine that can save lives.

Where Do Taipans Live?

Taipans live in different habitats depending on their species.

  • Coastal taipans prefer warmer, wetter areas. They can be found in forests, woodlands, and even sugarcane fields. They often hide in hollow logs or abandoned animal burrows.
  • Inland taipans live in the dry, hot plains and deserts of central Australia. They are well-adapted to these harsh conditions.
  • Papuan taipans are found in the tropical lowlands of Papua New Guinea.
