Taiping Houkui (pronounced tai-ping hoe-kway) is a special type of green tea. It comes from the Anhui province in China. This tea is grown near a famous mountain called Huangshan. People have been growing Taiping Houkui tea for a very long time. It was even picked for emperors during the Qing Dynasty.
This tea became popular for everyone to buy in the early 1900s. It is mostly made around a small village called Hou Keng. In 2004, Taiping Houkui won a big award, being called the "King of Tea" at a special exhibition in China. It is also known as one of China's most famous teas.

What Makes Taiping Houkui Tea Special?
Taiping Houkui tea is known for its unique look. It has "two knives and one pole." This means it has two straight leaves that hold a large bud with white hairs. The leaves are a deep green color. They also have red veins on the underside. These tea shoots can grow very long, up to 15 centimeters (about 6 inches)!
Where Does the Best Taiping Houkui Grow?
The very best Taiping Houkui tea comes from specific villages. These are Houkeng, Hougang, and Yanjiachun. Tea from areas nearby might also be called Taiping Houkui. However, it usually costs less because it is not from these top spots.
The Special Tea Plant
The leaves for Taiping Houkui tea come from a special plant. It is called Shi Da Cha. This plant has very large leaves. You can only find this type of tea plant in the Anhui Province of China.
