His Rise to Power

Taira no Tadatsune was born around October 19, 975. He grew up to be a strong samurai lord. In his time, samurai families often held important positions in the government. Tadatsune was a key figure in the Taira clan. This family was one of the most powerful groups in Japan.

Tadatsune's roles as Governor and Vice-Governor gave him much influence. These jobs meant he was in charge of large areas of land. He managed local affairs and collected taxes. His connection to the Ise Grand Shrine also showed his importance.

The Uprising and Its End

In 1028, Tadatsune decided to leave his job as Vice-Governor of Kazusa. He then started attacking the provinces of Kazusa and Awa. He wanted to gain more land and power for himself and his family. This action was seen as a rebellion against the central government.

The Imperial Court's Response

The Imperial Court in Kyoto was the main government. They wanted to stop Tadatsune's actions. They first asked Minamoto no Yorinobu, who was Governor of Ise Province, to lead an army against Tadatsune. However, Yorinobu said no.

Next, the Court chose two other leaders, Taira no Naokata and Nakahara Narimichi. But they did not make any progress against Tadatsune. So, the Court soon called them back.

The End of the Rebellion

In 1030, the Governor of Awa Province had to escape to Kyoto because of Tadatsune's attacks. The next year, in 1031, a new leader stepped forward. This was Minamoto no Yoriyoshi. He was appointed Governor of Kai Province.

Yoriyoshi was a very skilled military leader. Tadatsune knew he could not win a fight against Yoriyoshi. So, Tadatsune decided to surrender without a battle. He was taken prisoner. Sadly, he passed away on the journey to the capital city. His rebellion came to an end.
