Tajogaite or Tajogaite Volcano is a special kind of volcano called a monogenetic volcano. This means it is expected to erupt only once in its lifetime. It is found in the area of El Paso on the island of La Palma, which is part of the Canary Islands in Spain.
This volcano was formed during an eruption that started on September 19, 2021. This was the most recent volcanic eruption on La Palma and in all of Spain. The eruption lasted for 85 days, finally stopping on December 13, 2021. It was the longest eruption ever recorded on La Palma and the third longest in the Canary Islands.
What's in a Name?
The name Tajogaite comes from an area on La Palma island. This area is in the municipality of El Paso, near a place called Montaña Rajada. The name "Tajogaite" has been used for a long time.
It shows up often in old records about land ownership from the 1700s. However, the name is even older than that! It dates back to when the Benahoarites, the original people of the island, lived there.
