Takanini (sometimes spelled Takaanini) is a suburb located in the southern part of Auckland, New Zealand. It sits by the water, specifically the Pahurehure Inlet, about 28 kilometers (17 miles) southeast of Auckland's main city center.
Takanini is known for a few important places. It has a Fonterra milk factory and several large housing areas like Addison. You can also find places where horses are bred for racing and other purposes. For shopping, people in Takanini visit the Takanini Town Centre and Southgate Shopping Centre.

Discovering Takanini's Past
Takanini has a rich history, named after an important Māori chief.
How Takanini Got Its Name
The suburb is named after Ihaka Takaanini. He was a significant Māori chief in the area during the 1800s.
The Great South Road's Role
An old highway called the Great South Road runs right through Takanini. This road was built a long time ago, during the New Zealand Wars. Its purpose was to move supplies for soldiers fighting in the Waikato region. It was a military road, guarded by armed police.
New Zealand's First Flights
Takanini holds a special place in New Zealand's aviation history. In February 1911, the very first successful airplane flights in the country happened here. Two brothers, Vivian Walsh and Leo Walsh, flew their plane named Manurewa at Glenora Park. This area is now near the Southgate Shopping Centre.
Changes in Local Government
In 1989, there was a big change in how local areas were governed. Takanini became part of the Papakura District. Later, in October 2010, the entire Auckland Region became one large city council. This meant that many smaller councils, including Papakura District, joined together. Now, Takanini is part of the Manurewa-Papakura Ward within the Auckland Council.

The Auckland Southern Motorway and the main railway line run through Takanini.
- Trains and Buses: Most public transport uses trains and buses. Trains on the Southern Line run often between Takanini and Auckland's city center (Britomart).
- Roads: While the motorway and Great South Road usually flow well, traffic can get busy closer to central Auckland.
- Southern Pathway: This is a 4.5-kilometer shared path for walking and cycling. It runs next to the motorway section between Takanini and Papakura. It connects Takanini with nearby suburbs like Conifer Grove and Rosehill.

Bruce Pulman Park is the main sports hub in Takanini.
- Sports Facilities: The park has many facilities, including a scout hall and a gymnastics stadium. There are also outdoor netball courts and a large indoor stadium. This indoor stadium is used for basketball, volleyball, and netball.

- NZ Sikh Sports Complex: The NZ Sikh Sports Complex Takanini opened on March 22, 2020. It has seven grounds for different sports like soccer, volleyball, netball, and athletics. The soccer ground meets FIFA standards.
