Takashi Shimoda (下田 崇, Shimoda Takashi, born 28 November 1975) is a famous Japanese football player. He used to play as a goalkeeper. Today, he works as a coach for the Japan national team. He helps train the goalkeepers.

Takashi Shimoda: A Japanese Football Star

Takashi Shimoda was born in Hiroshima, Japan, on November 28, 1975. He grew up loving football. After finishing high school, he joined a professional football club. This club was called Sanfrecce Hiroshima.

Playing for Clubs

Takashi Shimoda started his career with Sanfrecce Hiroshima in 1994. At first, he didn't play many games. There were other experienced goalkeepers ahead of him. These goalkeepers were Kazuya Maekawa and Kazumasa Kawano.

In 1997, Kawano left the club. Then, in 1998, Maekawa got injured. This was Shimoda's chance! He became the main goalkeeper for the team. He played regularly until 2007. Sadly, he got a knee injury that year. He stopped playing in 2008 and retired from football at the end of the 2010 season.

Playing for Japan

Takashi Shimoda also played for Japan's national teams.

Playing for Youth Teams

In April 1995, he was chosen for the Japan U-20 national team. They played in the 1995 World Youth Championship. He played in two matches, including a quarterfinal game.

In July 1996, he was picked for the Japan U-23 national team. This team went to the 1996 Summer Olympics. He didn't play in any games there. Another goalkeeper, Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi, played instead.

The "Miracle of Miami"

Even though Japan's team didn't go past the first round in the 1996 Olympics, they did something amazing. They beat Brazil in their first game! This was a huge surprise. People in Japan called it the "Miracle of Miami" (マイアミの奇跡).

Winning the Asian Cup

On March 31, 1999, Shimoda played his first game for the main Japan national team. This game was against Brazil.

He was also part of the Japan team for the 2000 Asian Cup. He didn't play in any matches during this tournament. However, Japan won the whole competition! This was a big achievement for the team.
