Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Takin al-Khassa Abu Mansur Takin ibn Abdallah al-Harbi al-Khazari (Arabic: تكين الخزري) was a powerful commander in the Abbasid Empire. He came from a group of people called the Khazars. Takin was famous for being the governor of Egypt three different times. He passed away on March 16, 933.

Early Life and First Time as Governor

Takin grew up and became an officer under a ruler called Caliph al-Mu'tadid. A Caliph was like a king or a supreme leader of the Islamic world at that time. Caliph al-Mu'tadid ruled from 892 to 902.

In August 910, Takin was chosen to be the governor of Egypt. He took over from another governor named Isa al-Nushari. Takin stayed in this important job until May 31, 915. He was removed from his position because he couldn't stop an invasion of Egypt by a group called the Fatimids. This invasion happened between 914 and 915. After Takin, Dhuka al-Rumi became the new governor.

Second Time as Governor

Takin was given the job of governor again in the autumn of 919. This happened after Dhuka, the previous governor, died. Once again, Egypt was facing a second invasion by the Fatimids.

Takin arrived in the city of Fustat (which was the capital of Egypt then) on January 6, 920. Luckily, a strong army led by a commander named Mu'nis and a navy (ships) led by Thamal al-Dulafi came to help. Together, they successfully pushed back the Fatimid invaders. The last Fatimid soldiers left the Fayyum Oasis and ran away across the desert on July 8, 921. Takin was replaced on July 22, but he was briefly put back in charge just a few days later.

Third and Final Time as Governor

Takin's third time as governor was his longest. It started in March or April 924 and lasted until he died on March 16, 933.
