Takumi Watanabe (渡辺 匠, Watanabe Takumi, born March 15, 1982) is a former Japanese football player. He played as a midfielder for several clubs in Japan.
Takumi Watanabe's Football Journey
Takumi Watanabe was born in Iwaki, Fukushima on March 15, 1982. After finishing high school, he joined Kawasaki Frontale in 2000. This team had just moved up to the top league, called J1 League.
Right after joining, Takumi went to Brazil for a year. He said this was a "very good experience" because the midfield play there was "extremely intense." It felt like players were "really clashing" on the field.
When he returned in 2000, he didn't play any matches. His team, Kawasaki Frontale, then moved down to the J2 League in 2001. From 2001, Takumi started playing many games as a defensive midfielder. This player helps protect the defense and win the ball back.
In 2003, he changed his position to a center back. This player helps defend the goal. He became a regular player in this new role. However, he played less often from 2004. Even though his team won the championship in 2004 and returned to J1 in 2005, he hardly played in the top league.
In 2006, Takumi moved to Montedio Yamagata, another J2 League team. Here, he became a regular defensive midfielder again. From mid-2007, he played less, but his team made history. Montedio Yamagata was promoted to J1 for the first time in 2009! Takumi played many matches as a substitute midfielder that year.
In 2010, he joined Roasso Kumamoto and played in many games. The next year, 2011, he moved to Matsumoto Yamaga FC. This team was in the Japan Football League, a lower division. He played many matches, and the club was promoted to J2 in 2012.
In 2013, Takumi moved to Yokohama FC in J2. He didn't play many matches during his three seasons there. Finally, in 2016, he moved to his hometown club, Fukushima United FC, which played in the J3 League. He played many games as a defensive midfielder for two seasons. Takumi Watanabe retired from football at the end of the 2017 season.
