Talus facts for kids
The talus is a very important bone in your foot. It's one of the main bones that helps form your ankle joint. This bone is super important for how you move your foot and for keeping your balance.
It's the second biggest of the seven tarsal bones. These bones are all found in your ankle and the top part of your foot. The talus sits right between your calcaneus (which is your heel bone) and your navicular bone.

What is the Talus Bone?
The talus is a unique bone because it connects your lower leg to your foot. It's shaped a bit like a pulley. This special shape allows your foot to move smoothly up and down. It's a strong bone, but it's also very important for flexibility.
Where is the Talus Located?
Your talus bone is deep inside your ankle. It sits on top of your heel bone, the calcaneus. On its front side, it connects to the navicular bone. Above it, the talus connects with the two long bones of your lower leg: the tibia (shin bone) and the fibula. Together, these bones create the ankle joint, which is also called the talocrural joint.
What Does the Talus Do?
The talus has a few big jobs:
- Weight Bearing: It carries all the weight of your body down to your foot. Every step you take, your talus is working hard!
- Movement: It helps your foot move up (dorsiflexion) and down (plantarflexion). Think about pointing your toes or lifting them towards your shin – that's your talus in action.
- Balance: Because it's a key part of the ankle joint, the talus helps you keep your balance. It allows your foot to adjust to uneven ground.
Keeping Your Talus Healthy
Since the talus is so important for movement and weight, it's good to keep it healthy. Wearing supportive shoes, warming up before sports, and stretching can help protect your ankle and the talus bone. If you ever hurt your ankle, it's important to rest it and get it checked out.
