Tama Janowitz, born on April 12, 1956, is an American writer. She writes novels and short stories. She became known as one of the "brat pack" authors. This group included writers like Bret Easton Ellis and Jay McInerney. Her book, Slaves of New York, was made into a movie in 1989.

Her Life and Writing
Early Life and Education
Tama Janowitz's parents divorced when she was ten years old. She grew up with her mother and brother. They lived in Massachusetts. For two years in the late 1960s, they also lived in Israel.
She went to college at Barnard College and Hollins College. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1977. Later, she received a Master of Arts degree in 1979. In 1985, she earned another degree from the Columbia University School of the Arts.
Becoming a Writer in New York
After finishing her studies, Janowitz moved to New York City. She started writing about life in the city. She became well-known in the city's writing and social groups. She also spent time with the famous pop artist Andy Warhol.
Her collection of short stories, Slaves of New York, made her very famous in 1986. This book tells stories about a young woman named Eleanor. Eleanor explores the artistic world of lower Manhattan. Andy Warhol wrote in his diary that the characters Eleanor and Stash were based on Janowitz and her friend.
Books and Movies
The book Slaves of New York was turned into a movie in 1989. James Ivory directed the film, and Bernadette Peters starred in it. Tama Janowitz wrote the movie's script herself. She even had a small role in the movie, playing Bernadette Peters' friend.
Janowitz has written seven novels. She has also published one collection of short stories and one non-fiction book. She used to live in Brooklyn with her husband and daughter. Now, she lives near Ithaca, New York.
Her Memoir
In August 2016, Janowitz published her memoir called Scream: A Memoir of Glamour and Dysfunction. A memoir is a book about a person's own life. In her book, she writes about her childhood. She also shares stories about hanging out with Andy Warhol and dancing at Studio 54. The book talks about her journey as a writer. It also covers her more recent life, including caring for her mother.
