It was made by OLM and is based on the popular Tamagotchi digital pets, which were created by Bandai and WiZ.

The movie was directed by Jōji Shimura and written by Aya Matsui. It was shown in Japanese theaters on December 20, 2008. Later, it came out on DVD on June 26, 2009. It was also released in France on February 17, 2010.

This film is the second Tamagotchi movie ever made. It follows Tamagotchi: The Movie. It also takes place before the 2009 TV show called Tamagotchi!. An English version of the movie was available in the Philippines, but it was hard to find. Madman Entertainment had planned to make an English version, but it was canceled.

The Story of the Happiest Tamagotchi!

At Tamagotchi School, the Tamagotchi kids are excited. They are waiting for the flying library to arrive! The library is a special ship with magical books. When you read these books, you get to go inside the story! You even become the main character.

A new student named Kikitchi makes a rude comment about Mametchi's dream. Chamametchi tells Mametchi that Kikitchi is new. Mametchi explains how the flying library works. Kikitchi has super good hearing. He hears the ship's horn before anyone else. Soon, the ship appears. The Otogitchi Siblings, who run the library, land the ship. The kids rush inside!

Inside the library, the children pick out books. When they open them, objects pop out! Then, the Tamagotchi kids jump into their chosen stories. Chamametchi flies on a magic carpet. Mametchi explores space in a cool machine. Memetchi goes to a fancy party and meets a prince. Kuchipatchi eats tons of candy in a land made of sweets. Other Tamagotchi dance and fly in musical lands. Kikitchi is the last one seen. He sits alone on a leaf, looking at the sky. He doesn't seem to like his story at all.

After their adventures, the kids leave the library. Kikitchi hears a tiny voice asking for help. No one else can hear it, so they think he's imagining things. As Mametchi, Memetchi, Kuchipatchi, and Chamametchi talk about their stories, Memetchi and Makiko argue about the prince. Kikitchi throws banana peels, making them fall. He laughs. Memetchi asks if he liked his story. He says he didn't like it at all.

Meanwhile, Mametchi gets an idea for an invention. He rushes home and tries many times. Finally, his experiment works! He invites his friends to watch him finish it. But something goes wrong. A small, cute creature appears! Mametchi explains that he didn't mean to create a living thing. This creature can absorb sad feelings and make others happy. Mametchi names his new friend "Hapihapitchi."

While everyone celebrates Hapihapitchi, Kikitchi eats a big meal alone. He turns on the TV. He sees an ad for Celebria, a new super-shopping mall. Kikitchi's parents appear on TV. They explain they built Celebria for all Tamagotchis to have fun. Kikitchi sadly turns off the TV. He watches fireworks from his window.

Hapihapitchi starts using her power to make people happy. She tries to help Kikitchi, but he runs away. He yells that forcing happiness is "nonsense." Over time, Mametchi notices a problem. Hapihapitchi is making people unhappy in the long run. They start to depend on her to feel happy. Mametchi tells Hapihapitchi to stop using her powers for a while.

At school, the flying library returns. Kikitchi, hiding, hears the small voice again. He starts looking for where it's coming from. Hapihapitchi also feels the sadness from the voice. She starts looking too. Kikitchi, Mametchi, Memetchi, Kuchipatchi, Chamametchi, and Hapihapitchi all meet up. A book opens at their feet. It's called "The World's Happiest Story."

They enter the book. Unlike other books, they don't become the main characters. The story is about a man named Happy and his dog, Lucky. Happy wants to be the happiest man. He leaves his home and Lucky to find happiness. He becomes rich and a hero, but he's still not the happiest. The Tamagotchis find Happy, but he doesn't want their help. As they follow Happy, they notice the story loops. The end brings them back to the beginning. Kikitchi realizes Happy acts like him. He starts to feel bad. Before they can help Happy, the school bell rings. They have to leave the library. Kikitchi secretly takes the book with him.

Back home, Kikitchi remembers a time when he was younger. He heard a tree say it would rain. He told other kids about it, but they called him a liar. Unable to wait, Kikitchi enters the book he took. As he does, a paper tornado appears around Celebria. It turns Tamagotchis caught in it into flat, two-dimensional figures! Mametchi's family sees the news. Mametchi and Chamametchi immediately think of Kikitchi. The family goes to Mame Laboratories to talk to scientists.

At the lab, a scientist explains that the last page of Happy's story was torn out. This made the story unstable. Kikitchi entering the book made it even more unstable, affecting the real world. To save the world, Otogitchi, the library captain, needs to write a new ending with a magic crayon. Mametchi's dad, Papamametchi, lets Mametchi and his friends go into the story to save Kikitchi.

Mametchi and his friends enter the book on the flying library ship. Inside the book, Kikitchi is talking to Happy. Happy thinks he'll never be happy. The flying ship finds them. Otogitchi explains they need to write a new ending. They try different endings, but they all disappear. This means they aren't right. Otogitchi gets discouraged. The other Tamagotchi give him ideas about what makes them happy. Kikitchi's idea, someone saying "hello" to him in class, gives Happy an idea.

But the world inside the story starts to fall apart! The magic crayon drops. Happy says he can't leave the book. Hapihapitchi asks Mametchi if she can try to make Happy happy. Happy is surrounded by memories. He finally decides how his story should end. Kikitchi bravely gets the magic crayon back. He asks Happy what he wants. Happy wants to go back home, just as it was before he left. Otogitchi's sister draws a door. Happy opens it. Suddenly, the book stops falling apart and goes back to normal! Kikitchi realizes Lucky was the one calling for help. He is happy that Happy is now happy.

Suddenly, Hapihapitchi collapses. Mametchi explains that without happiness, Hapihapitchi will die. Hapihapitchi weakly sprinkles her last bit of happiness over Kikitchi. She says she promised to make him happy. Kikitchi starts to cry. Mametchi says Hapihapitchi needs to absorb happiness. But no one can be happy while she's dying. Happy walks over to Hapihapitchi. He picks her up and tells her he is the happiest man in the world! Suddenly, Hapihapitchi gets her health back. She springs to life! Kikitchi stops crying but is still sad. The Tamagotchi wave goodbye to Happy and Lucky. They leave the book on the flying ship.

Back in the real world, the people of Tamatown celebrate their heroes. Kikitchi's parents comfort him. They promise to spend more time with him. Happily, Kikitchi introduces his parents to his new friends.

The end credits show Tamatown being cleaned up after the paper tornado. The Tamagotchi children continue to enjoy the magical storybooks. A picture in Mametchi's home briefly shows Tanpopo, a character from the first Tamagotchi movie.
