Tamanishiki San'emon: A Sumo Legend
Early Life and Training
Tamanishiki was born Nishinouchi Yasuki. He started his sumo journey by joining Nishonoseki stable. This stable was quite small back then. Because of this, he often trained at Dewanoumi stable. There, a great yokozuna named Tochigiyama Moriya helped train him.
Tamanishiki later became the head coach of Nishonoseki stable. He did this while still competing as a wrestler! Under his guidance, his stable became very successful.
Rising Through the Ranks
In May 1930, Tamanishiki was promoted to the rank of ōzeki. This is the second-highest rank in sumo. He was the first wrestler from Kōchi Prefecture to reach this rank in 25 years. He won three championships in a row from October 1930 to March 1931.
In January 1932, a big event happened in sumo called the "Shunjuen Incident." Many top wrestlers left the Sumo Association. But Tamanishiki was one of the eleven who stayed. After this event, he became the first leader of the Rikishi-kai. This was an association for active sumo wrestlers.
Becoming a Yokozuna
Tamanishiki won his fifth championship in May 1932. Finally, in November 1932, he was given the special title of yokozuna. He was the first yokozuna in sumo for about a year and a half. His promotion was also a way to thank him for staying with the Sumo Association during the difficult "Shunjuen Incident."
Tamanishiki also helped train other wrestlers. He often visited Tatsunami stable to teach. One of the wrestlers he trained was Futabayama Sadaji, who later also became a yokozuna. Tamanishiki beat Futabayama the first six times they wrestled. However, he could never beat him again after Futabayama started his amazing winning streak in 1936.
His Unique Style
Tamanishiki was the first yokozuna to lift one leg very high during the yokozuna dohyō-iri. This is the special ring-entering ceremony that yokozuna perform. People said his style was very graceful and beautiful. When Futabayama became a yokozuna, he copied Tamanishiki's unique leg-raising style. This style is still very popular in yokozuna ceremonies today.
In 1938, Tamanishiki sadly passed away due to an illness. He was still an active sumo wrestler at the time.
