Tamara Gverdtsiteli (Georgian: თამარ გვერდწითელი, Russian: Тамара Михайловна Гвердцители; born on January 18, 1962) is a famous singer, actress, and composer. She is from Georgia, Israel, and Russia. She has been honored with the titles of People's Artist of Georgia (in 1991) and People's Artist of Russia (in 2004).

Early Life and Music Start

Tamara Gverdtsiteli was born on January 18, 1962, in Tbilisi, which was then part of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic. Her father came from an old Georgian noble family. Her mother, Inna Kofman, was Jewish. Her grandmother was the granddaughter of a rabbi from Odessa.

Tamara studied music at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire. She learned to play the piano there. In the early 1970s, when she was young, she joined a children's music group called Mziuri. She was a lead singer with them. The group traveled and performed all over the Soviet Union. Tamara sang with Mziuri for seven years.

Music Career Highlights

When Tamara was 19, she won second place at a big music festival in Dnipropetrovsk. She also won an international competition called "Red Carnation" in Sochi. Two songs, "Music" and "Blossom, my land," helped her become very well-known.

In 1982, she took part in a popular music contest in Dresden. In 1988, she won the Golden Orpheus song contest. After that, she was invited to perform as a special guest at festivals in Sopot and Sanremo. Since 1987, Tamara has also been a judge at music festivals.

International Success

In 1991, a French agent invited Tamara to Paris. There, she met famous musicians Michel Legrand and Jean Dréjac. She signed a contract with Legrand. Her first concert in Paris was at the famous Olympia theater. Michel Legrand introduced her to the audience, saying, "Paris! Remember this name."

Tamara's songs often had strong messages about society. She also sang beautiful, gentle love songs. Over time, she started writing more and more of her own music. Some of her biggest concerts include her solo show at Olympia in Paris (1994). She also performed with the A. Kozlov Ensemble at Carnegie Hall in New York (1995). Michel Legrand also presented her in a concert in New York (1996).

Recent Activities

From 2007 to 2008, Tamara was part of the Supreme Council of the Civilian Power party. In 2010, she performed the role of Carmen in an opera at the Dnipropetrovsk Opera House. She sang with Giovanni Ribichesu, a baritone from Milan.

In 2014, Tamara Gverdtsiteli became a judge on The Voice of Ukraine. This is the Ukrainian version of the popular TV show The Voice. She was also a judge on The Voice Senior in Russia in 2020. In the spring of 2022, she stopped performing in Russia for a while.

Personal Life

Tamara Gverdtsiteli has been married three times. Her first husband was Giorgi Kakhabrishvili. He was a director and a leader at Georgian Public Broadcasting. They married in 1984. In 1986, their son, Alexander, was born. They divorced in 1995.

Her second husband was a lawyer named Dmitry Breslav. They moved to Boston together. Sadly, Dmitry died a few months later from heart problems. Her third husband was a heart surgeon named Sergei Ambatelo. They divorced in December 2005.

On July 12, 2000, Tamara Gverdtsiteli became a citizen of Russia.
