Early Life and School Days
Tammam Salam was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on 13 May 1945. He comes from a very well-known family that has been involved in politics for a long time. His father, Saeb Salam, was also a Prime Minister of Lebanon many times. His mother, Tamima Mardam Beik, came from both Syrian and Lebanese families.
His grandfather, Salim Ali Salam, was an important official during the time when the Ottoman Empire ruled Lebanon and later when France had a special role there. He was a representative for Beirut in the Ottoman parliament and also led the Beirut city council. Tammam Salam has two older sisters and two younger brothers.
Tammam Salam went to the Grand Lycée Franco-Libanais and Haigazian University in Beirut. He also studied economics and management in England.
Starting His Career
After finishing his studies, Tammam Salam started his career as a businessman. In the early 1970s, he began to get involved in politics. In 1973, he created a group called the Pioneers of Reform Movement. This group aimed to promote peaceful and balanced policies during a time of trouble in the country.
Even though some people saw it as his father's private group, Tammam Salam decided to close the movement when the Lebanese Civil War began. He did this to make sure his group would not get involved in any fighting.
In 1978, he joined the Makassed foundation, which is a charity organization in Beirut, as a board member. He became its president in 1982. The leadership of this foundation had been passed down through the Salam family for generations. Tammam Salam stepped down as president in September 2000, but he is still the honorary president today. He also became the head of the Saeb Salam Foundation, which focuses on culture and education.
Political Journey
In the 1992 elections, Tammam Salam was going to run for parliament, but he decided not to. He did this to protest against Syria's strong influence in Lebanon at the time. He wanted to support the Lebanese Christians and help keep a fair balance between different groups in the country.
Salam was first elected to the parliament in 1996, representing Beirut as an independent politician. However, he lost his seat in the 2000 elections. He did not run for office in the 2005 elections.
On 11 July 2008, he was appointed as the Minister of Culture in the government led by Prime Minister Fouad Siniora. Salam won his seat in the 2009 elections. He worked with Saad Hariri and was part of his political group in Beirut. Tammam Salam was an independent member of the Lebanese parliament. He was also part of a group called the Lebanon First bloc, but he was not officially a member of any political party. This made him a central figure in Lebanese politics.
On 30 September 2015, Prime Minister Tammam Salam spoke at the United Nations General Assembly. He also attended other events and met with many world leaders.
Becoming Prime Minister
After Najib Mikati resigned as prime minister on 23 March 2013, Tammam Salam was chosen to be the new prime minister. He was seen as a leader who could bring different groups together. On 6 April 2013, he was asked to form a new government after getting support from 124 out of 128 parliament members. On 15 February 2014, he announced that his new government, made up of 24 ministers, was ready.
In 2014, Tammam Salam's government also took on the role of the presidency. This happened because the parliament could not agree on electing a new president to replace Michel Suleiman. Two years later, Michel Aoun was elected president. After this, Tammam Salam resigned, and a new government was formed.
Tammam Salam's Beliefs
After the assassination of Rafik Hariri on 14 February 2005, Tammam Salam shared his thoughts. He said that "Playing with emotions is a very dangerous game in Lebanon." He meant that it's risky to stir up strong feelings among people, and he noted that Hariri himself never did that.
Family Life
Tammam Salam is married to Lama Badreddine. He has three children from a previous marriage.
