His grandfather, Salim Ali Salam, was an important official. He served during the Ottoman and French rule in Lebanon. He was a representative for Beirut in the Ottoman parliament. He also led the Beirut city government. Tammam Salam has two older sisters and two younger brothers.
Tammam Salam went to Grand Lycée Franco-Libanais in Beirut. He also studied at Haigazian University in Beirut. He earned a degree in economics and management from a university in England.
Starting His Career
After finishing his studies, Salam first worked as a businessman. He became involved in politics in the early 1970s. In 1973, he started a group called the Pioneers of Reform Movement. This group wanted to promote peaceful solutions during a difficult time in the country.
However, Tammam Salam closed the movement when the Lebanese civil war began. He did this to avoid his group getting involved in fighting.
In 1978, he joined the Makassed foundation. This is a non-profit charity group in Beirut. He became its president in 1982. Leadership of this foundation had been passed down in the Salam family for generations. Tammam Salam left his role as president in September 2000. He is now the honorary president of the foundation. Later, he also became the head of the Saeb Salam Foundation. This foundation focuses on culture and higher education.
Later Political Roles
In the 1992 general elections, Salam planned to run. But he later decided not to. This was to show his disagreement with Syria's strong influence in Lebanon at the time. He wanted to support Lebanese Christians and keep a balance between different groups.
Salam was first elected to the parliament in 1996. He represented Beirut as an independent candidate. However, he lost his seat in the 2000 elections. He did not run for office in the 2005 elections.
On 11 July 2008, he became the Minister of Culture. This was in the government led by Prime Minister Fouad Siniora. Salam also won his seat in the 2009 general elections. He worked with Saad Hariri during the election. Salam was an independent member of the Lebanese parliament. He was seen as a neutral figure in politics.
On 30 September 2015, President Tammam Salam spoke at the United Nations General Assembly. He also attended other events and met with leaders from around the world.
Becoming Prime Minister
After Najib Mikati resigned as prime minister on 23 March 2013, Tammam Salam was chosen to form a new government. Many members of parliament supported him. On 6 April 2013, he was officially asked to form the government. He received 124 votes out of 128 parliament members. On 15 February 2014, he announced that his new government was ready. It had 24 ministers.
In 2014, Salam's government took over the role of the presidency. This happened because the Parliament could not elect a new president after Michel Suleiman's term ended. Two years later, Michel Aoun was elected president. This led to Salam's resignation and the formation of a new government.
