History of the Tampico Cathedral
The building of the Tampico Cathedral started a long time ago. The very first stone was placed on May 9, 1841. This was a big step for the city.
Building Challenges and Changes
An architect named Lorenzo de la Hidalga was in charge of the building work around 1850. The cathedral faced some tough times during its construction. In 1917, a part of the main roof, called the central nave, fell down. A few years later, in 1922, the west tower was hit by lightning and also collapsed.
Cathedral Completion and Design
Even with these challenges, the cathedral was finally finished and officially opened on November 12, 1931. It has a special design with three long sections inside, called naves. Its overall shape is like a Latin cross when you look at it from above.
