Tamshiyacu is a town in northeastern Peru. Its name comes from the Quichua language. Tamshi means "rope," and Yacu means "water." The town is part of the Fernando Lores District, close to the city of Iquitos.
Life in Tamshiyacu
Tamshiyacu is home to about 8,000 people. It sits right on the banks of the mighty Amazon River. The town is about 50 kilometers (31 miles) upstream from Iquitos. You can reach it by speedboat in about an hour.
Most people in Tamshiyacu work in fishing. They also grow crops like humari, pineapples, cassava (a root vegetable), and bananas.
The Peruvian Amazon is famous for its many special plants and trees. Some of these are used as traditional medicines. One important traditional medicine is called Ayahuasca. It is prepared by shamans, who are traditional healers in the jungle.
