Tancred is a small, special area in Yolo County, California. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it's not officially a city or town with its own local government. It's also a census-designated place (CDP), which is a specific area that the government counts for population surveys. Tancred is located about 299 feet (91 meters) above sea level.
History of Tancred
The community of Tancred was named after Tancred, Prince of Galilee, a famous historical figure. It was started by a group called the Western Cooperative Colonization and Improvement Company. This company helped over 40 families from cities move to this area.
These families bought more than 800 acres (about 3.2 square kilometers) of land together. They worked as a team, sharing their tools and efforts for farming. They also built important community places, like a plant nursery and a park.
Tancred had its own post office, which was open from 1892 to 1932. However, in 1896, a very bad frost hit the area. It killed many of the fruit trees that the farmers were growing. This event caused the company to go bankrupt. Sadly, many of the families who were part of the farming cooperative lost their land.
After this, new landowners found other crops that could grow well in the colder weather. They started growing grains and nuts instead of fruit. Because of these challenges, the community of Tancred has not grown much since it first began.
