Tancítaro is a city and a municipality in the western part of the Mexican state of Michoacán. A municipality is like a local government area. The main city in this area is also called Tancítaro.

This region is famous for its avocados. It is often called "the avocado capital of the world." Every year, people celebrate with an Avocado Festival.

Geography of Tancítaro

The Tancítaro municipality covers an area of about 717.65 square kilometers. This is about 1.21% of the total area of the Michoacán state.

It shares borders with several other municipalities. To the north, it borders Peribán and Uruapan. To the east, it borders Nuevo Parangaricutiro. Parácuaro is to the southeast. To the south, you'll find Apatzingán, and to the southwest is Buenavista.

Pico de Tancítaro Volcano

A large volcanic mountain called Pico de Tancítaro is located in this municipality. It is also known as Volcán Tancítaro. This mountain is 3,845 meters (about 12,615 feet) tall. It is the highest point in the entire state of Michoacán.

In 2005, the Tancítaro municipality had a population of 26,089 people.

World Record for Guacamole

Tancítaro is not just known for growing avocados. It also holds a world record! On April 6, 2018, the local plant health board, called Junta Local de Sanidad Vegetal de Tancítaro, made the biggest serving of guacamole ever.

This giant bowl of guacamole weighed an amazing 3,788 kilograms (about 8,351 pounds). That's a lot of avocados!
