Tanya Kappo is a Cree woman from the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation. She is known as an important activist for Indigenous rights. She helped start the Idle No More movement. This movement works to protect the rights of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Tanya Kappo also worked briefly for the Canadian government's inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.

Early Life and Learning

Tanya Kappo grew up on the Sturgeon Lake Reserve in Northwestern Alberta. This area is part of Treaty 8 Territory. Her father was Harold Cardinal, a well-known author. He wrote a book called The Red Paper. Tanya went to the University of Manitoba. She earned a law degree there in 2012.

Her Work as an Activist

Tanya Kappo is one of four women who started the Idle No More movement. This happened in November 2012. She said they started the movement because of new laws. These laws, especially Bill C-45, would affect First Nations people.

Tanya also helped edit a book. It is called The Winter We Danced: Voices From the Past, the Future, and the Idle No More Movement. This book shares stories about the Idle No More movement.

In 2017, Tanya worked for the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. This inquiry looked into why so many Indigenous women and girls have gone missing or been murdered in Canada. She worked in community relations. This meant she helped connect the inquiry with Indigenous communities. She left this job in June 2017.

Later in 2017, Tanya hosted an event. It was about Indigenous Climate Action. This group works on climate change issues. They are led by Indigenous people. In 2020, Tanya was working as a lawyer in Alberta.

Running for Office

In 2006, Tanya Kappo ran in a federal election. She was a candidate for the Liberal Party of Canada. She ran in the area called Peace River in Alberta. She did not win the election. The winner was Chris Warkentin from the Conservative Party of Canada.

Her Family Life

Tanya Kappo has three children. She lives in the city of Edmonton, Alberta.
