Tapalaya was a special restaurant in Portland, Oregon, that served a mix of Vietnamese and Cajun food. It was owned by a talented chef named Anh Luu. The restaurant was located in a neighborhood called Kerns. Tapalaya opened its doors in 2008 and closed in 2019. After it closed, a new vegan restaurant called The Sudra took its place.
A Look Back at Tapalaya
Tapalaya first opened in northeast Portland in 2008. Chef Anh Luu was the head chef there. In 2014, she gave the menu a fresh, new look. Then, in 2017, she bought the restaurant and became its owner.
Chef Luu was also on a TV show called Chopped in 2015. Her special recipe for "Chicken, Shrimp, and Andouille Sausage Gumbo" was even put into a cookbook. The cookbook was called Portland Cooks, Recipes from the City’s Best Restaurants & Bars and came out in 2017.
In February 2019, someone broke into the restaurant. Despite this, Tapalaya still took part in Portland Dining Month. This is a special event where restaurants offer unique meal deals. Also in 2019, the Portland Mercury newspaper included Tapalaya on its list of "100 Portland Happy Hours: Northeast." This list featured great places for happy hour deals.
Tapalaya closed its doors in 2019 because Chef Luu moved to New Orleans. A writer for The Oregonian newspaper, Michael Russell, included Tapalaya on his list of "Portland's most memorable restaurant closures of 2019."
