Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tara Elise Brendle is an American mathematician. She studies a special area of math called geometric group theory. This field mixes ideas from algebra and a type of geometry called topology. She looks at how shapes can be twisted and moved. Professor Brendle is a math professor and leads the math department at the University of Glasgow.

Becoming a Mathematician

Tara Brendle started her journey in mathematics at Haverford College. She earned her first degree in math there in 1995. She was a very good student.

While at Haverford, she was also a talented volleyball player. She won awards for her sports skills in 1992. She also did important math research as a student. Her work on knot theory earned her a special mention. This was for the Alice T. Schafer Prize, which honors young women in math.

She continued her studies at Columbia University. She earned her master's degree in math in 1996. Later, she completed her Ph.D. in 2002. Her Ph.D. advisor was the famous mathematician Joan Birman.

After finishing her Ph.D., Dr. Brendle taught at other universities. She was a professor at Cornell University and Louisiana State University. In 2008, she moved to her current job at the University of Glasgow in Scotland.

Awards and Honors

Dr. Brendle has received many important awards for her work. These awards recognize her contributions to math and her efforts to help other mathematicians.

In 2014, she became a member of the Young Academy of Scotland. This group brings together talented young leaders.

She was chosen as a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2020. This honor was for her work in geometry and topology. It also recognized her lectures and her support for women in mathematics.

In 2021, she became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a very respected group in Scotland. In the same year, she won the Senior Whitehead Prize. This prize honored her important work in geometric group theory. It also recognized her excellent support for math and mathematicians.
